KIWI Design Camera Wall Mount

KIWI Design Camera Wall Mount

Finally there is a good looking camera mount on the market! And at a very reasonable price too (€9.99 per piece, or €15.99 per set of two on Amazon.de as of November 2019)
It's purpose is to mount any camera that has a standard 1/4" threaded mounting point (standard tripod mounting) permanently in place. This design not only offers the flexibility required to position the camera, but it also looks good enough to use it in a permanent application, such as a security camera.

Some quick specs:

Foot Diameter: 60mm 2.4"
Ball joint to mounting surface: 86mm 3.4"
1/4" Threaded rod: 25 mm 1"
Inner Tube material: Stainless Steel
Outer surface material: Aluminium Alloy, Powder Coated (in white or black)
Threaded stud material: Aluminium Alloy
Mounting base material: POM
Degree of freedom around main shaft: 360°
Degree of freedom around ball joint: 95°

Mounting methods: 3M double-sided tape (included), 3 screws / plugs (included)

So here's a rundown of the process of setting up the wall mount:

Packaging is good :)

It comes in a box-in-a-box

The mount comes disassembled in parts inside the box. But if you know that the stainless steel tube sits inside the Aluminium tube, the assembly more or less is clear already. There is a user manual in the box, however, for if you want to check.

Line-up of the assembly

First insert the ball joint into the main shaft, and screw on the camrea nut.
The nut has a rubber pad, which prevents damage to the camera, but also makes sure the nut won't come loose if the mount is used in an environment that is subjected to vibrations. Make sure the rubber pad is on the camera side, though ;)

Next, insert the stainless steel tube into the main shaft and shove the white (or black if you chose that colour) dome over the shaft/ball-joint/nut assembly.

Next, the dome can be screwed on to the base.

And assembly is complete! :)

The mount can be stuck to a smooth suface with the 3M double-sided sticky tape. This has a fairly strong adhesion. But for heavy-duty applications, it is recommended to use the supplied screws (or use your own, if you prefer).

By tightening the dome, the steel tube compresses the ball of the ball joint inside the outer shaft, effectively securing it in the position it is in at that moment. Not much torque on the dome is needed to create a truly stiff joint, so that the camera will not move.

It is even a strong enough clamp to keep my Canon EOS 70D in a skewed position. With this lens, the camera weighs almost 1300 grams, and the center of gravity is relatively far forward with this amount of glass in front of the body. So the clamping is impressively strong!

Of course, most of the applications for this mount are with security cameras, or action cameras, or similarly light cameras. I plan to use the mount on the enclosure of my 3D printer, once that is finished, with an IP camera so that I can monitor the printing process.

At the moment, the mount can only be bought throug Amazon in Germany. If you are interested in this proper design pearl, here's a link to the product page on Amazon:
